Perceiving the Evolution of Communication

The evolution of communication is rapidly changing. As each mode of communication is introduced, the time it takes for people to catch on to it is decreasing. When the telephone was first invented the only way others could find out about it was by word of mouth or via snail mail/newspaper. Once the radio was invented people became aware of it by word of mouth, snail mail, and by telephone. After the TV was invented users learned of its availability via word of mouth, snail mail, telephone, and radio. The time it takes to reach users today is minute compared to 100 years ago. One picture can go viral within an hour today, whereas 50 years ago it would have taken days or even weeks for everyone to know.

There are so many forms of communication it can even be overwhelming. Personally, I get overwhelmed with the social media I have. If I haven't checked Twitter for more than 12 hours then I'm completely lost. There's so much to scroll through just to get where you last left off I usually end up skipping it. However, sometimes I might miss something important and then I don't understand what all my friends are talking about!

Although I may feel a loss of belonging when I don't check my social media constantly, I also get irritated when I am around others who are constantly on their phones. Every time I watch a movie with my friends I'm continually telling them to pay attention because they are on their phones. Like the YONDR invention, I try to keep my phone out of my hands while I'm attending an event. I used to record concerts I went to but now I realize that was pointless. What am I going to do with a low-quality video where I can barely hear the music because of my own singing and screaming? I have learned to "live in the moment" as Jason Mraz would say.

As shown in the "Far Speak" video, when inventions are made no one really thinks they will revolutionize the world at the time. Yet with all of our evolving technology there is nothing off limits anymore. Who knows, maybe one day we'll be able to communicate solely with our minds ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
