The rise of fake news and what we can do about it

#FakeNews has been a trending topic in the last year. Since Donald Trump first mentioned it, it has become a phrase in almost everyone's vocabulary. I'll admit, even I use it in a joking manner sometimes. However, the amount of fake news articles has risen drastically within the last few years and we as a society need to end it. But how?

First, we can start by reading a news article fully before sharing. So many of us, including myself, read the headline of a news article and automatically share it before we even read the article itself. If we read the article in its entirety we can better determine if the research is fake or not.

Second, we can all start to fact-check the articles we read and educate others. Although it will definitely take some time, fact-checking will benefit us in the long run and help stop the spread of fake news. Educating others so that they are more knowledgable on the spreading of fake news will also assist in its reduction.

Lastly, we can try to only share articles from reliable news sources such as CNN, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, etc. News from Buzzfeed, The Washington Post, and others are not as reliable and can be very biased at times.

Ultimately, it is up to us to stop the rise of fake news. If we all work together, we can eventually decreased its spread.
