Public Shaming Part 2
As I stated in my previous post, public shaming as a form of punishment can be extremely detrimental on a child. In addition, it can teach children that public humiliation is acceptable. If a child is publicly shamed, that same child has now learned from his or her parents that making fun of someone's mistakes is the right thing to do. I recently read in an article that humiliating children as a form of punishment is teaching them that "laughing at the mistakes of others is the correct social response." This kids could likely grow up to become bullies themselves. While parents may think they are doing the right thing by punishing their child, they are implementing this punishment entirely in the wrong way. Everyone thinks it's funny at first, but they don't consider the effects this type of punishment could have on the child.
Public shaming should be discouraged from the beginning to prevent future consequences. Children will carry this type of behavior on in their life, creating a cycle of public humiliation. People make mistakes all the time, especially children. Instead of teasing them about these mistakes, parents should be teaching them what to do or say. Ultimately, it comes down to better education of parenting skills. Hopefully people will realize soon just how harmful public shaming is as a form of punishment.
